hopefuls made their pitches to iowa voters today at the annual iowa straw poll. steve handlesman is live with more on the big day. hi, steve. >> reporter: hi, jim. it's a beautiful cool evening here in central iowa. there was an air of ang anticipation. now they're counting the straw poll ballots. there's a delay, we're told, because of all the write-in ballots. that may be the rick perry factor. a lot of people told me today they were going to write in the name of the texas governor who just today became an official candidate, so he wasn't on the ballot. so he rained on the parade here. he tried to kind of upstage the party, that a lot of republicans focus on. this is their baby. they're really focused on the effect on the republican race that this straw pole has. it's like a fair. with lots of food, lots of people, and bands. but the stars are republican candidates, like rick santorum. and tim pawlenty. tea partier michele bachmann. libertarian ron paul, and others. mitt romney was not in the state. iowaians came to the straw poll not for the music, but they waited in long lines to cas

and steve jobs' fate were just one thing. we've gotten used to the fact he has health problems, yet the company seems to just be booming. >> it's kind of -- there are different perspectives. the perspectives tend to follow how the stock is doing. so when the stock is having a bad time, people say, this is the steve jobs' premium having an impact and when the stock is doing well they say steve jobs isn't part of the stock anymore. i think we'll find out that if and when steve jobs is no longer a part apple. and, you know, the sense in the market more and more is that the -- it's the foregone conclusion he will not be there in the, you know in the semimoderate term future. but really it's unsure. and, you know, if they announced it tomorrow, nobody knows what really would happen. there is a sense that still a lot of the innovation at apple happens around steve jobs. and so there is concern still whether or not that innovation will be there when and if he's gone. and -- but apple has put a lot of effort into teaching us if you will, that there are people other than steve jobs. they put

'll call the straw poll. they say it's a circus, looks like fun. steve brown is there live in ames and we've got to ask you, steve. what have you sampled? it's a political carnival. the only place i can think of where you can sign a wind blade from one of the huge wind turbines, energy generating turbines. and that's here and folks that generate electricity make the turbines, want to tell folks, hey, we would like the attention of voters as well. this is the line to get into the beef sundays offered by the michele bachmann campaign. some of them have been in line 45 minutes and that's an indication of not only perhaps how good the sundae is about you how big the draw in her particular tent. by the way, is air conditioned. that's an air conditioned tent up over that way. michele bachmann is in line to be a traditional winner. at least a favorite to come out on top in terms of the vote total when all of these folks get done voting by the end of the day and the polls close at four o'clock central time and that will be five o'clock eastern. but rick santorum also has an opportunity to win and
